Is It Authentic Mexican Food Or Tex-Mex?

Authentic Mexican

Authentic Mexican food dates back to the times of the Mayans and the Aztecs. Both groups of people were native to what we now know as Mexico. Their cultures collided and together they crafted up foods like corn tortillas, beans, chili peppers, wild game, and fish. Then, when Spain invaded, the Spanish introduced foods like garlic, dairy, pork, and various herbs and spices. What we now know as authentic Mexican cuisine combines all of these ingredients and is cooked in a cast-iron skillet, fried, or steamed. Examples of Mexican dishes include enchiladas, tamales, tomatillos, and salsa.

Tex-Mex has more modern roots. This type of food is a combination of Mexican cuisine and American cuisine. Tex-Mex, as you can assume by its name, was first introduced in Texas. Residents of the area enjoyed Mexican cuisine and decided to make it at home using their American cooking techniques and ingredients. Beef and flour were introduced into Mexican meals, creating what we now know as Tex-Mex. Examples of Tex-Mex food include nachos, fajitas, and any dish that uses black beans, wheat flour, yellow cheese, canned vegetables, and beef.
